Chinese School exists as a method of rote learning by associating a word with an object or image. L. Ron Hubbard advocated this method for use in scientology, although no one could classify it as a commonly used method of learning in scientology.

According to this article, the Chinese have now abandoned Chinese School because research has demonstrated that such methods destroy creative thinking.
Scientology Patter Drills, as developed by Dan Koon and approved by David Miscavige, impose 100% rote-learning on a student, not facilitating any opportunity for conceptual thinking. Patter drills constitute a more extreme version of rote learning than Chinese School.
